Citizenship and R.E.(CR)

Citizenship and Religious Education
Citizenship and Religious Education is taught throughout Key Stage 3 and 4.  Lessons take a modular approach and are
organised into four separate strands:  Careers Education; Personal, Social and Health Education, Citizenship Education and Religious Education.

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
PSHE includes topics such as:  Puberty and Conception, Health Issues, Drugs Awareness, Relationships and personal
Portfolios. We make excellent use of outside agencies to help us deliver effective, informative and highly engaging lessons. Our team includes our Police Liaison Officer and our local community Health Nurses.

Careers Education
Careers Education includes topics such as:  Key Skills, Action Planning, Job Application Skills, Post-16 Choices and Qualifications and Pay.  Students will also undergo Health and Safety training prior to a one week work experience placement in Year 10.
We have a well-resourced careers suite which, with the school library, provides an information and guidance service for students.  Computers provide access to material stored in the library and advice/information programmes.  There are strong links with Connexions, providing every opportunity for students to receive individual guidance.

Citizenship Education
Citizenship Education gives students the knowledge and understanding to become informed citizens. It develops skills of enquiry, communication, participation and responsible action. Topics include: Conflict and Democracy, Rights and Responsibilities, Non-State Organisations, Diversity, International Issues, Power and Politics and The Economy.
Citizenship Education also gives students time to reflect on the nature of being a good citizen and how they can
become active in their own local communities, as well as taking part in Sedgehill’s extensive range of activities initiated by the students own Student Voice – such as Talent Shows, Fund Raising Events, School Trips, our own Health Drop-in, and helping in the local community. In KS4 students all follow a GCSE short course.

Religious Education
At KS3 students research aspects of six world religions and we also explore some basic philosophical questions. The
topics covered include such areas as:
• If there is a God why is there so much suffering?
• Does religion cause more harm than good?
• What are the causes of evil?
• What do religions teach about life after death?
• Did Jesus really rise from the dead?

At KS4 all students follow a GCSE short course which involves 4 topics:
• Rights and Responsibilities
• Environmental and medical issues
• Peace and conflict
• Crime and punishment

Students approach the areas of study in a variety of ways including film, reading stories and drama. One of the main
aims of Religious Education is for students to investigate rights and wrongs about attitudes and behaviour, to help them come to their own beliefs and to respect the rights of others to have their own beliefs too. Religious Education at Sedgehill assists all students, whether they have a personal faith or not, to become more educated and aware of people.
