History is both a popular and successful department within the school. History is taught within the Year 7 Baccalaureate, for three hours over a fortnight in Year 8 and 9, for five hours over a fortnight at GCSE and for ten hours over a fortnight at A Level.

Highlights:
History is taught in a creative and enquiry focused way at Sedgehill School. Students are encouraged to develop a keen interest in the past and to develop the skills to develop their own opinions about what actually happened. Students learn to handle evidence in a logical way to help them in their research. 

The History Department play a large role in the life of Sedgehill School. The Department celebrate Black History Month and International Women’s Day with themed lessons and events and also contribute to a wide range of extra-curricular activities. We are also proud of our tradition in organising school trips at all key stages. Recent trips include the Belgian Battlefields, Rome and Berlin.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

Year 7 classes are taught in mixed ability tutor groups and follow the Baccalaureate syllabus. The year 7 and 8 schemes of work provide plenty of opportunity to develop historical skills linked to specific parts of the National Curriculum. In year 8 and 9 students continue to be taught in mixed ability tutor groups. They work towards the National Curriculum requirment for their end of KS3 National Curriculum levels in May. Year 9 topics include:

War and Revolution
What was America like between the Wars?
How accurate are historical films?
Why were the sixties swinging?

Key Stage 4

We follow the AQA syllabus. The structure of the course covers:

Controlled Assessment - 25%
Students complete a 1,500 essay about the bombing of Sandhurst Road School. Students prepare for this in class and complete their final pieces of work in exam conditions.

Medicine Through Time - 35%
Students take this exam at the end of year 10. Students will be examined on Disease and Illness, Surgery and Anatomy and Public Health. The exam includes source analysis tasks and essay questions.

Germany 1918 - 1945 - 40%
Students take this exam at the end of Year 11. Students will be examined ont he impact of WW1 on Germany, the failire of the Weimar Republic, the rise of Hitler and life in the Nazi state. The exam includes source analysis tasks and essay questions.

Key Stage 5
We follow the Edexcel syllabus. Students need a B grade in History GCSE or another Humanities GCSE to study A levl Histoy. The structure of the course covers:

Year 12 AS Level

Unit 1: Historical Themes in Breadth Option D
World Divided - Communism and Demoncrary in the 20th Century

Students study USA civil rights and Russia during the revolution.
1 Hour and 20 minute exam
2 questions worth 30 marks
50% of AS level mark

Unit 2: British History Depth Studies
Option C2: Conflict and Chnage in 19th and 20th Century Britain - Britain c1860 - 1930: The Changing Position of Womena dn the Suffrage Question

1 hour 20 minute exam
2 source based questions
Question (a) is worth 20 marks and question (b) is worth 40 marks.
50% of AS level mark.

Year 13 A2 Level

Unity 3: Depth Studies and Associated Historical Controversies
Option D: The Challenge of Fascism D1 From Kaiser to Fuhrer - Germany 1900 - 1945

2 hour exam
2 questions - Section A - one question froma choice of two (30 marks). Analytical essay question. Section B - one question fro a choice of two. Interpretation question including source work.
60% of total A2 mark.

Unit 4: Historical Enquiry - The ottoman Coursework

Maximum work count is 4,000 words.
Section A - Extended essay of 2,000 words
Section B - extended essay of 2,000 words
40% of total A2 mark.
