At Sedgehill we understand that moving to secondary school is a huge step for year 6 students. This is why we have designed a curriculum especially for our year 7 students to help them move successfully from their primary school to the next stage in their education. At Sedgehill we recognise that the skills, knowledge, experiences and talents that students bring with them from secondary school are a firm foundation to be built upon.
Our aim is to ensure every child settles into secondary school life quickly and that they feel safe and secure. The Baccalaureate curriculum is taught in mainly double lessons, and covers approximately three quarters of the year 7 Curriculum. This means that your child has three main teachers resulting in a greater opportunity for us to really support your child both academically and pastorally. Students move around the building less and learning time is maximised.
There are three main strands to the Baccalaureate; Humanities (covering English, History, ICT, Geography, Religious Education, Citizenship and Personal Health and Social Education), Science and Maths and Art and Design. The curriculum has been developed as a topic led curriculum that means teaching and learning happen in a more meaningful and personal way for our students.
We have an exceptional teaching team which include staff with primary expertise. Teaching and learning focuses on the skills required to be a successful, independent and highly motivated learner. Teachers use a range of approaches to their lessons ensuring students are active and fully involved in their own learning. Homework and the virtual learning environment (a Fronter website that supports the curriculum via the internet) are also carefully planned to support learning within each topic.
The curriculum is designed to ensure all learners achieve their full potential. A teaching assistant supports each class. The social and emotional aspects of learning are important to us and we aim to provide lessons that build self esteem and raise aspiration.
Our gifted and talented learners are set challenging tasks to ensure they continue to reach the highest levels possible. Our less able, less confident learners are nurtured and supported with tasks that are relevant, meaningful and achievable.
We also aim to get our learners and the learning out of the classroom and we take our students on several trips throughout the year. We are keen to work closely with parents and carers in supporting students and hold open classroom events where students and parents can look at work and discuss progress and attitudes towards learning.
The Sedgehill Baccalaureate seeks not only to ensure each one of our students experience the perfect start to their secondary education but that we develop skills for learning that will guarantee them success throughout KS3 and KS4, at G.C.S.E. and beyond.
