The specific purpose of Art and Design within the education process is to stimulate and develop the inherent aesthetic nature in each human being. The Art and Design staff operate as a team and are all committed to promoting high standards in Art at Sedgehill. We have seven teachers qualified in Fine Art, each offering an additional specialism. There are six general purpose Art classrooms on the ground floor with an additional room on the lower floor. In addition there is a specialist darkroom, a specialist pottery and a small 6th form Art base on the lower floor.
The aims are to:
1. Create an atmosphere of fun and pleasure in learning.

3. Teach students to discern and analyse good design.
4. Develop students’ sensitivity and aesthetic judgement.
5. Show the importance of Art and Design and its relevance to daily life.
6. Use student’s own experience as a stimulus to self-expression.
7. Realise the individual’s potential and develop expressive skills.
8. Provide an environment conducive to learning and the exchange of ideas.

10.Develop visual awareness and powers of observation
All students are taught in mixed ability classes.
Key Stage 3
Art at KS3 is above all, interesting, fun and exciting. We make masks, pottery and work with lots of other interesting materials. Students enjoy and become increasingly confident in Art and hence it is a popular choice at KS4.
Key Stage 4
The work set at KS4 is thematic and follows the GCSE EDEXCEL guidelines. In the first unit the programme of work is prescriptive to give students confidence and ensure they explore and experiment with a wide range of media and scale. Having built up their confidence students are given the freedom to develop their ideas and communicate visually.
Applied Art and Design – involves a more vocational approach to Art.
Key Stage 5
At AS and A2 students follow the 2 year EDEXCEL ART or PHOTOGRAPHY course. The first unit of work concentrates on building observational skills through drawing, painting, printing, collage, multi-media, computer photo manipulation and photography. The second unit requires work on a theme developing the 3D skills of ceramics, sculpture and installation work.
At AS and A2 students can follow the 2 year EDEXCEL Photography course.
Art at Sedgehill promotes and recognises the diversity, and the wealth of different cultural backgrounds to be found at Sedgehill school.
