MissThe Learning Support Department consists of a team of six specialist teachers and thirty Teaching Assistants, led by the Teaching Assistant Team Leader, who work with students who have a variety of Special Educational Needs. Students’ needs are addressed in two ways. Students may be withdrawn to work in the Department in small groups with the lessons being designed to meet students’ individual needs. Teaching Assistants trained to work with SEN students, provide support in the classroom helping them to access the curriculum successfully and develop further confidence as learners. A small number of Teaching Assistants work with the Vocational Groups in KS 4, three work solely in the Hearing Impaired Unit, two who are linked to a specific year group work closely with the Year Co-ordinator and a small number work in Spectrum.
The Learning Support Department, which is situated on the first floor, has a suite of rooms and is well resourced with computers and Interactive Whiteboards. For many students, the Learning Support Department provides a safe and secure environment where students’ social, emotional and learning difficulties are addressed and achievements are recognised. Every child really does matter as the Learning Support staff offer an all-round, encompassing approach where the welfare, the emotional well being of the student is as important as the academic support given. Some Students may follow a personalised timetable with various interventions in place.

Key Stage 4
Option Support is offered to help students in Years 10 & 11 with the increased workload demanded by the GCSEs they are studying. They are given advice and guidance on their homework and coursework assignments and an important focus is placed on learning and revision skills. Students may follow a Vocational course, working in a smaller group with in class support. Designated Teaching Assistants work closely with the Vocational Department to support students with their COPE coursework.
Enrichment and Enhancement Activities
Lunch time clubs take place on Mondays to Fridays, when students are encouraged to take part in various games, crafts and construction activities to develop their literacy and social skills further. Homework support is also available
As incentives for good behaviour and learning we offer trips after school and one or two weekends away each academic year. These are always in great demand and enjoyed by all.
