The 10 specialist Maths teachers in the department are dedicated to raising the achievement of every pupil in the school, from those with SEN needs in year 7 to A2 students aiming to go to University. Pupils are taught Maths and Science in their mixed ability tutor groups in year 7 and taught in sets according to their ability from year 8 onwards. Termly assessments provide the opportunity for promotion to higher sets, allowing pupils to make progress and fulfil their mathematical potential. All staff teach across the age and ability range in Key Stages 3 and 4

KS3 at Sedgehill
We have a rich and varied curriculum at KS3, the majority of which is covered in year 8, that covers the 5 attainment targets – Using and Applying Maths, Number and Calculating, Algebra, Shape and Data Handling. In addition to this, pupils also do investigations, projects and ICT work. We offer extra-curricular activities such as Mathematical Art, Chess and Snooker clubs.
KS4 at Sedgehill
The GCSE course starts in the Spring term of year 9, following the new AQA GCSE curriculum, which is divided in to 3 units – Data Handling and Number, Number and Algebra and Geometry and Algebra. Students will sit the Unit 1 exam in November of year 10, Unit 2 at the end of year 10 and Unit 3 in year 11. There are opportunities to retake Units 1 and 2. The new curriculum places a lot of emphasis on functional skills and putting Maths in context, both of which will help prepare students for the Maths they will face in everyday life. Top set classes will also be given the opportunity to do a 1 year GCSE Statistics, enabling them to leave school with 2 mathematical GCSEs.
KS5 at Sedgehill
The department runs a successful Edexcel A level Maths course for students who achieve a grade B or above at GCSE. The AS course consists of 2 Core modules and a Statistics module. Those students who achieve at least a grade D at the end of the AS course go on to study 2 more Core modules and Mechanics in year 13. In the last 3 years all students have achieved or exceeded their baseline grades. This is due to the quality of the teaching and the close, positive relationship that exists between the teachers and the students.
